Judge Judy has announced her retirement from TV – and named her successor

After 30 years on our screens, Judge Judy has named her successor.

For 30 years, one no-nonsense figure has laid down the law on television — Judge Judy Sheindlin. Now, at 83 years old, she’s putting down the gavel for good and taking a step back from her on-screen role.

Thankfully, it seems that Sheindlin already has someone in mind as her replacement: her son, Adam Levy. However, according to her team, she is “not retiring, just rewiring” to step behind the camera in a producer capacity.

“Judge Judy is passing the gavel to her son, Adam Levy, in Adam’s Law, the courtroom program she created and is an executive producer,” a representative for the television personality told Fox News Digital.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the legendary television personality said she had plans to retire after her Prime Video series Judy Justice wrapped in October.

“I have a lot of other things of interest,” she said. “I don’t want to do hair and makeup anymore, but I still want my message to get out there.”

While it might seem like nepotism, Sheindlin is confident that her son has what it takes to lay down the law — and make it entertaining while he does it.

“There aren’t a lot of people who can carry a half hour on their own unscripted. He has what it takes,” she says.

Judge Adam Levy has followed in his mother’s footsteps.

As for Levy’s legal experience, he followed in his mum’s footsteps into the legal world, graduating from the New York Hofstra Law School.

After taking a year off to be a ski instructor (something which made his mother very upset), he began working for the Suffolk County district attorney’s office. He went on to work in private practice before serving two terms as the District Attorney of Putnam County.

In 2023, Levy joined the Prime Video series Tribunal Justice, a reality show set in a court room with a tribunal of judges weighing in on real cases also created by Sheindlin.

Adam’s Law will be broadcast in the United States from September 14, but an Australian premiere date has not been set yet.
