Moment Nat Barr breaks down in tears live on Sunrise
The Sunrise host couldn’t hold back her tears after a particularly personal segment on Seven’s morning show.
Sunrise host Nat Barr was reduced to tears after a Mother’s Day segment on the show that featured appearances from the mothers of the show’s on-air talent.
The segment saw Barr, co-host Matt Shirvington, newsreader David Woiwod and weather presenter Sam Mac all sit down for one-on-one conversations with their mothers.
Barr’s conversation with her mother Julie was especially emotional, as the TV host asked her mum to name the hardest part of motherhood.
“I think it’s when everybody grows up and moves away, as you’re finding out now,” Julie said, a reference to Barr’s own sons Lachlan and Hunter, who both recently left home.
“Yeah, I don’t think many people talk about when they move away,” said Nat, tears in her eyes.
Barr then asked her mother to name one thing she “hoped I never stop doing.”
Julie gave her daughter this advice: “Never stop being a lovely mother, a loving mother, and a loving wife.”
“Thank you, that’s really nice. I didn’t expect you to say that,” said Nat.
“Didn’t you, though? You’d be surprised what your mother will say,” Julie told her.
Live in the studio, both Shirvington Barr appeared overcome with emotion after the prerecorded segment had played.
“Wow. If we weren’t crying before, we’re crying now. Love you mum,” said Shirvo.
“Thank you to our mums, that was gorgeous. And unexpected answers I got, did you?” asked Barr, who struggled to speak as she was overcome with tears. “Sorry.”
Shirvington noted that the segment had been a rare opportunity to sit down and ask their mothers some deeper questions, and thanked the producer of the interview for giving them “a beautiful thing – not just right now, but forever.”
“Tissues please, anyone?” Shirvo asked, before dashing off camera to find some.
In a 2024 episode of Sunrise, Barr opened up about how she was adjusting to life as an empty nester after her younger son Hunter moved to Canberra for University.
“I miss them so much,” Barr told her co-hosts, revealing she would be spending her weekend “going to Canberra to see my little boy.”
A year earlier, the devoted mum had even tapped out of a Sunrise episode early so that she could be there for Hunter’s final day of high school.
“It’s our last son’s last school assembly, so I’m about to take off … quite emotional! I’m sure lots of viewers have gone through it, and it’s kind of big. Bit of a milestone. I’m going to be off for the rest of the show,” Barr told viewers.
