Aussie model Miranda Kerr and her billionaire husband have donated millions to help more than 250,000 families in an incredible act of generosity.
Miranda Kerr and her billionaire husband, Evan Spiegel, have shown an incredible act of philanthropy by helping pay off the medical debt of more than 250,000 Americans.
The Aussie model and the Snapchat co-founder and CEO announced their charitable gesture in an Instagram video shared on Saturday, revealing they made a multimillion-dollar donation to US non-profit organisation Undue Medical Debt to help wipe off $US550 million ($800 million) worth of unpaid medical debt.
“Hey everybody, Evan and Miranda here,” the 36-year-old mogul began in the video. “And today we are so excited because we’re announcing a partnership with Undue Medical Debt to relieve over half a billion dollars of unpaid medical debt for more than 250,000 Californians.”
Spiegel and Kerr explained that 250,000 chosen beneficiaries in California would begin receiving letters in the mail starting mid-July regarding their forgiven medical debt.
Kerr, 43, went on to reassure people that their letters are genuine and explained the reason they have made their donation public is so that recipients won’t think they are being scammed.
“If you happen to receive a letter in the mail letting you know that your medical debt has been forgiven, we want you to know, it’s real,” she said, adding why she and Spiegel decided to get involved.
“When someone you love is sick, all you want to do is focus on helping them get better,” she said. “That’s why we wanted to support this effort and help relieve medical debt, so families can focus on caring for their loved ones and really supporting their healing.”
The model, who grew up in the small country town of Gunnedah in New South Wales, said they wanted to send anyone who receives their donation “so much love”, with Spiegel adding that he hoped their donation gave recipients “a little peace of mind and allows you to focus on what matters the most”.
In the comments section of their Instagram video, one grateful user revealed they had benefited from the scheme and thanked the couple for their generosity.
“I got a letter! And I was like is this real!? And so it is, I was hoping to write a letter but it was so anonymous so I’m happy to know who it is,” the user shared. “Thank you so much for using your career and resources to make a positive impact on SO many people. Bless you and your family!!!!”
Kerr married the Snapchat executive in 2017 and together they share three sons: Hart, 8, Myles, 6, and Pierre, 4. The former Victoria’s Secret model also shares son Flynn, 15, with her ex-husband, actor Orlando Bloom.
Spiegel’s net worth is approximately $US2.1 billion ($3.045 billion), thanks to his ties with Snapchat, which he launched with two of his Stanford University fraternity brothers in 2011.
The disappearing photo and video app famously helped Spiegel become the world’s youngest billionaire at the age of 24 in 2015.
Kerr, who has modelled for all the major fashion houses and fronted countless magazines throughout her career, is also cashed up with an eye-watering $US60 million ($88 million) net worth.
After stepping away from the runway and full-time modelling following her 2017 marriage to Spiegel, Kerr is focused on her Kora Organics health and beauty company, which she founded in 2009 and now turns over upwards of $US23 million ($33 million) annually.
