EastEnders casts Joel Marshall’s mum – with real-life family connection

Joel is coming back to Walford with his mum in tow.

EastEnders spoilers follow.

There will be a brand-new face in Walford on Wednesday (July 15), as EastEnders welcomes Joel Marshall’s mum Cleo to Albert Square. Cleo will be played by Mazz Murray, the real-life aunt of Joel actor Max Murray.

Speaking about her casting, Mazz said: “It was so wonderful to be part of these EastEnders episodes as we delve into Joel’s familial past, and my experience was made all the better working alongside my talented, gorgeous nephew Max. And also, my childhood school friend Alex Walkinshaw playing [Ross] my ex-husband!”

Mazz is an accomplished singer and theatre actress, having played the role of Donna in the West End production of Mamma Mia! for six years.

Fans will know that in January Joel was sentenced to six months in a Youth Offender Institution after attacking his now-stepmum Vicki.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Joel was being released early with Priya delivering the news to daughter Avani who was one of his victims. However Avani was assured that Joel would be staying at his mum’s house.

In tomorrow’s episode, which will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am and will then be shown on BBC One on Thursday July 16, at 7.30pm, Cleo will arrive in Walford with Joel in tow.

Cleo will reveal that, despite a previous arrangement, Joel is no longer able to live with her.

The news comes just as Ross and Vicki return from their honeymoon, leaving the newlyweds shocked.

As Vicki was adamant that Joel couldn’t live in Walford for the sake of their relationship, Ross faces with an impossible decision, choosing between his new wife and his only son.

Previous spoilers have also revealed that Joel will be targeted by his former friends when he tries to return to the Square.

Our EastEnders insider teased: “Nobody’s pleased to see Joel back. He knows he’s not wanted, so he’s surprised when one of the locals gives him a second chance.

“However, most of the community still think he hasn’t fully paid for his past and won’t be satisfied until they feel he’s properly punished.”
