The sad reason Tika Cetinich ‘disappeared’ after her first experience on TV

Tika Cetinich was on another TV show more than a decade ago, but after that experience, she 'disappeared for quite a bit'.

The Voice isn’t the first singing competition show that Tika Cetinich has been on. Back in 2015, she successfully auditioned for The X Factor, but didn’t make it past bootcamp.

“When I did The X Factor, I really, really wanted it,” she tells TV WEEK. “And then it didn’t happen. I think it pulled me down a few pegs… ‘Oh, I really wasn’t good enough.’ I disappeared for quite a bit after that.”

Tika is surprised to get as far as she has on The Voice.

Tika, now 35, has had plenty of work as a singer – just recently she’s been performing in a John Farnham show, an Adele show and a Paramore show, as well as teaching singing – but she’s suffered a lot of knockbacks, and has never felt like she’s made it as an artist in her own right.

“I’m still poor as all hell,” she adds. “I’m going, ‘Oh, can I afford dinner tonight, maybe?’”

Going into the blind auditions on The Voice, Tika was so convinced that no chairs would turn for her that she only asked for one week off from her job as a singing teacher.

“And then I had to call going, ‘Um, I’m going to be gone for a bit longer… but just one more week!’”

Tika’s mum is one of her biggest supporters.

Getting a four-chair turn at the auditions and then continuing to be put through by coach Richard Marx, right through to the semi-finals, has been “surreal” for Tika. It’s given her self-confidence a boost, and motivated her to start her own band.

“The big goal is to finally just release my own songs,” she says. “I’ve started doing that now, and I even sent a song to Richard to get his advice on it. And he was like, ‘That’s really good. It’s like Heart and Evanescence put together.’”

Tika says if she hadn’t gone on The Voice, nothing would have changed for her.

“I would still be doing the same gigs and just coming to the realisation that that’s all I’ll ever do. But now I’m like, ‘Hey, watch out, world!’”

Catch The Voice on Monday at 7.30pm and Sunday at 7pm on Channel Seven or 7plus.
