Coronation Street reveals hope for Todd and Sarah’s future after huge row

Coronation Street star Gareth Pierce has spoken exclusively to Digital Spy about Todd Grimshaw’s future – and it could be good news for fans of his friendship with Sarah Platt.

Todd recently told Sarah that he was cutting ties with her for good, after the shocking revelation that she was responsible for Theo Silverton’s murder. But in our new chat, Gareth has revealed that the pair’s close bond could be too good to lose from the show forever.

Gareth caught up with us while taking part in a stylish photoshoot celebrating Corrie‘s nominations at the Inside Soap Awards 2026. The stunning pictures with six different cast members appear in the new bumper issue of Inside Soap, which is out today (4 August).

Hi, Gareth! How does it feel to be up for Best Actor and Best Storyline at the Inside Soap Awards 2026?

“It’s a really lovely thing! I don’t think you can ever really go into your work thinking about things like this, but it was an exciting storyline to be involved in. It’s obviously very nice now to have times like this, where we can still talk about it a little bit!

“I’m really pleased. The team worked so hard in the development of the Todd and Theo story. It’s nice to know that it was put together so well and has landed so well with audiences.”

Why does Corrie deserve a vote for Best Soap this year?

“What’s been nice about some of the storylines this year is that they’ve really had time to develop and they’ve had that slow-burn feel. These days, there can be an emphasis on impact and we’re often told that our attention spans are becoming a little narrower!

“We’ve had the development of Debbie’s dementia, Todd and Theo’s story, and Shona and David’s story. A lot of those stories intersected in Corriedale too. It’s a refreshing way to tell stories when we’ve moved to high octane stuff. Although obviously you still got that high octane material in Corriedale too!”

What’s coming up for Todd?

“It’s going to be about regeneration now. You don’t want to stand still or feel that you’re in any way defined by a longer storyline that you’ve carried. Now it’s about what comes next, but you don’t want to make it feel like you’re forgetting that story and moving on.

“But hopefully what we’re going to find out is how Todd navigates this next six months to a year. We’re working to bring some of the humour back in as well. That was a real asset to the character and I love playing comedy too, so we’re bringing that in.

“There’ll be some moments that will feel comi-tragic because of the story and the dark relationship that Todd has just come out of. That’s always interesting to me – I do like the grey and a bit of dark comedy. That’s always the type of thing I like to play.”

Todd recently decided to cut Sarah out of his life. Will he stick to that, or is their friendship too good to lose?

“I can’t say too much, because on screen at the moment we’re at a point where there was a real finality to the way that Todd said that to Sarah. We’ll see the ways that certainty is challenged.

“It’s such a dear relationship and so long-standing in the show. We as actors and our audience would really mourn it, if it was entirely lost! It feels like such a lot to give up.

“But equally Todd’s best friend has just been implicated in the murder of Theo, so it’s high-stakes stuff and it’ll be interesting to see how they explore it.”

What was your reaction as Gareth when you found out Sarah was the killer? Did you chat about it with Tina O’Brien, who plays Sarah?

“I think we’re always aware, as more long-standing characters, that your morality is always in flux! There’s a danger zone with certain crimes or stories that you might be involved in. There’s that moment where you wonder ‘does that mean it’s an exit?’

“We’ve got these certain and sure relationships in the show and Tina as Sarah is one of those for me, in the same way Tony Maudsley as George is. So any time it’s someone close to you, you think: ‘What? Is everything going to be okay?’ So it was only a chat from that perspective!

“But what was nice for me and Tina was that it means we’d have loads of story together. We do find it very easy to work together and I think the relationship definitely does come across well on screen. That’s what you want to do – work with your favourite people, because then it doesn’t feel like work!”

Could Todd have ever been Theo’s killer?

“I think when we were in that period where we knew Theo was going to die and we didn’t know who was involved, then absolutely it could have been Todd. Our audience would agree that there was a fair bit of motive for Todd by then! We did explore certain moments where Todd’s stoicism in the face of that level of provocation from Theo was at its very edge and really being challenged.

“There were some moments where Todd did really push back and lose his temper, so definitely we laid some seeds that it could have gone that way. I’ll always look to explore anything they give me on the page, really! It’s always exciting. I don’t think it’s great to ever think that your character isn’t capable of all sorts.”

Would you like to see Todd get back onto the dating scene at some point?

“I think so! From a personal perspective, as a guardian and advocate for Todd, then I would love him to have a happier time of it. But I’m also aware that a lot of our big stories are generated by less happy circumstances.

“I definitely do want to see Todd exploring the dating scene, because I think that’s what we had leading up to the Theo relationship. It was a sense that maybe Todd was getting a little tired of a series of short-term relationships.

“Alongside that, he was seeing Billy and Paul going through something that was so, so hard – but also bonding them as a pair. It was really such a symbol of their love and dedication for each other.

“Because of Todd’s history with Billy and his previous meddling in that relationship, I think that will have made him believe in love and maybe want something like that for himself.

“It also probably will have made him feel a bit sad about the way his dating life was going in that same period. Todd was looking for something more lasting, which was unfortunately a slight vulnerability in the early part of his relationship with Theo.

“So you will have a sense with Todd now saying ‘I’m never going to let that happen to me again’, but I think he’s not going to give up hope of finding something lasting…”
