EastEnders – 7 Linda Carter exit questions answered after big announcement

Why is she leaving – and will anyone come back for her exit?

EastEnders spoilers follow.

It’s the end of an era for EastEnders – as Kellie Bright has decided to leave the BBC soap after 13 unforgettable years as Linda Carter.

Show bosses confirmed the sad news over the weekend, shocking fans who’d hoped that Linda would remain part of the Walford community for many more years to come.

But why is Kellie leaving and when will her final scenes air? We’re delving into everything you need to know about this high-profile departure…

1. Why is Linda Carter leaving EastEnders?

There’s no need for a petition calling for a rethink – Kellie Bright has made the decision to leave EastEnders of her own accord. Her departure has been in the works for a long while, as Kellie informed EastEnders chiefs of her intentions over a year ago.

EastEnders has been my home for 13 years and I have absolutely loved being part of the show, but I have decided that it is now the right time for me to say goodbye,” Kellie said in her exit statement.

“I made the tough decision over a year ago, and after discussing this with Kate Oates and Ben Wadey, they asked me to stay on to be part of an exciting storyline they had planned, and I happily agreed to extend my stay.”

Eagle-eyed fans have since noticed that these secret behind-the-scenes discussions fitted with Kellie taking an extended break from our screens last year.

Linda went away on a cruise in July 2025 and didn’t return until December. Viewers missed her when she was away – but little did they know that a permanent exit would eventually be on the cards.

2. When do Linda’s final scenes air?

Not until early 2027, it seems! Linda was one of the characters who appeared in EastEnders‘ New Year flashforward episode at the start of this year.

Those scenes confirmed that Linda will still be part of Walford life on 1 January 2027.

“We’ve still got a long way to go before we say goodbye, but I can promise that Kellie’s exit storyline will be full of unmissable drama,” executive producer Ben Wadey explained at the weekend.

3. Which storyline persuaded Kellie to stay?

There’s no confirmation of that just yet – and the show’s references to this have confused some fans, as Linda has been fairly quiet on screen for a while.

Since she arrived back on the Square in December last year, many of Linda’s scenes have revolved around her on-off romantic connection with ex-lover Max Branning.

This suggests that Kellie was persuaded to stay to play an important role in the many flashforward mysteries which currently surround Max’s character. She’s been on the periphery so far, but could this change in the months to come?

We’ve also recently seen Linda meet a new love interest – Clive Masters, a charming local councillor.

In a recent interview on This Morning, Jason Durr – who plays Clive – confirmed that he was still busy filming for EastEnders, which suggests that he’ll also play a significant role in the build-up to Linda’s departure.

Clive’s a diamond, he’s just a lovely, lovely guy, upstanding – which is rare for me recently, because I’ve just been playing baddies and wrong-uns,” Jason explained.

“It’s refreshing to be playing a goodie, and to be able to come into EastEnders playing a goodie. You normally come in and you’re always a baddie, so to be playing a goodie, it’s wonderful.”

Could Linda end up facing a choice between Max and Clive?

4. Will the Carters return for Linda’s exit?

That’s the million-dollar question! Many fans are hoping that Danny Dyer could stage a shocking comeback as Linda’s soulmate Mick, who’s been presumed dead since being swept away to sea on Christmas Day in 2022.

However, show insiders are already warning that a return for Mick seems unlikely, so it seems that we should manage our expectations.

Always outspoken in interviews, Danny has kept fans on their toes with his comments about EastEnders since leaving in 2022. In some chats, he’s spoken about the possibility of returning – even comparing Mick to Neighbours legend Harold Bishop, who famously returned from the dead.

“I do remember Harold Bishop, a few people have mentioned that to me because he died and then he came back, he washed up funnily enough, lost his memory,” he told iFL TV in 2023. “Who knows? They’ve kept it open, I could turn up in three years smothered in seaweed.”

However, Danny has also occasionally been at odds with EastEnders since leaving. He criticised the soap’s approach to duty of care in an interview last year, prompting the show to respond by saying: “We would never discuss an individual’s private matters however, we do not recognise these claims.

EastEnders has extremely robust and well-established procedures in place to safeguard the welfare of everyone who works on the show.”

We do know that Charlie Brooks will be reprising her role as Janine Butcher for a couple of episodes soon, which could provide some final closure on the saga of Janine, Mick and Linda.

Linda’s eldest son Lee and daughter Nancy are also still out there – could there be one last Carter family reunion before she goes?

5. What will this mean for Elaine and Johnny?

So far, there’s no word on whether Linda’s mum Elaine and son Johnny will stick around on the Square following her departure.

It’s notable though that show bosses have continued to invest in Elaine’s character over the past year, even while knowing that Linda wouldn’t be staying.

Elaine now has a key role running the B&B and a strong connection to Ian Beale, the show’s longest-serving character. We suspect this was an effort to broaden her horizons in the show ahead of Linda’s departure.

Johnny has been quieter, but is currently linked with Callum Highway. Plus, everyone in Walford needs a lawyer at some point…

6. Had Kellie spoken about leaving before?

Kellie’s departure has come as a surprise, as she previously seemed committed to the show. In 2022, when asked if she’d stay following Danny Dyer’s exit, Kellie told The Mirror: “I don’t think I’m done yet. I’ve always said while I’m happy and I’m enjoying the work – the work matters to me, I’m not someone who just turns up – I’m not that sort of person.

“I’ve honestly had such a good time with it and I’m hoping that will continue, and as long as it does I’m really happy to stay there. I really care about the show and when it’s good it’s really good.”

Then, in 2023, when EastEnders bosses filmed Kellie when breaking the news that Linda would kill Keanu Taylor, she immediately asked: “What’s going to become of me? Murderers go to prison! Am I gonna have to wear an orange jumpsuit?” Again, at that point it seemed that she was hoping to stay.

Despite that, Kellie has mentioned in other interviews that she never intended for Linda to be the final character that she’d play in her career.

So it seems that she always had ambitions to move on to other roles – it’s no secret that many actors enjoy the variety of exploring different projects, rather than staying in one place for too long.

7. Will Linda die?

Fortunately, it seems not!

Reports suggest that the door will be left open for Kellie to return in the future – which is good news following reports of a more final exit that’s imminent for Zoe Slater.
