Coronation Street fans shocked as soap makes unexpected appearance in Hollywood hit – did you spot it?

CORONATION Street fans have been shocked while tuning into a Hollywood hit on Netflix.

The Manchester-based soap opera made a very unexpected appearance new Netflix show Below – but did you spot it?

The Canadian miniseries, which is available on streaming platform Netflix, follows fisherman Calvin Penney, played by Josh Hartnett.

In the series, a vicious sea monster suddenly emerges from the depths and threatens the lives of people in Newfoundland.

At one point in the programme, an episode of Coronation Street can be seen and heard playing on a TV as character Irene Tulk, played by Canadian star Cathy Jones, sits back in her home to watch the show.

A fan on Reddit rushed to the platform to share their discovery.

“Look who popped up as a cameo in the Netflix series Below, filmed in Newfoundland, Canada! I wonder which episode was airing when this was filmed,” they penned.

Someone else replied: “That was cute! The spoiler is that a lady sits down to watch tv and it’s Coronation Street.”

The moment happened in the fourth episode of the first season.

Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, showrunner Jesse McKeown explained a little more about the soap’s cameo.

He told the outlet: “Coronation Street is huge here in Newfoundland. It’s very popular, and it was even big when I was growing up in Vancouver.

“It’s a big part of the culture, and then that scene with that character named Irene Tulk, played by Cathy Jones, was just a little window into the kind of people that still do live around the bay.”

And not only is the British soap huge in Canada, but the show Below shares a connection with it too.

One of Below’s producers, Louise Sutton, was a producer on Coronation Street very early in her career.

Jesse added: “She’s done a million amazing things since then, but in Newfoundland, she was a celebrity because she produced Coronation Street.”
