Tyrone controlled by toxic masculinity in Coronation Street as violence explodes

Tyrone is turning into someone that nobody likes

The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Coronation Street dated October 26. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.

Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) did something very out of the ordinary in today’s episode of Coronation Street, and it was all because of his father Ross Wilkes (Ian Burfield).

Over the past couple of weeks, Ross has gone to great lengths to try and steer Tyrone into having the same toxic views on masculinity that he has.

He decided to buy some boxing gloves and encourages Ty’s son Dorin to have a go. Dorin wasn’t keen, so Ross forced Tyrone to glove up instead. Things were uncomfortable as it was clear that fighting – be it through a sport or not – is just something that Tyrone doesn’t do.

When Tyrone’s daughter Ruby (Billie Naylor) expressed an interest in joining a boxing club, Tyrone said that he didn’t want her getting hurt. Fiz Dobbs (Jennie McAlpine) and Hope (Isabella Flanagan) immediately called Tyrone out on his view, accusing him of being sexist.

Ross has been brainwashing Ty

In today’s episode, Tyrone discovered that Dorin had sustained a bruise as a result of Chesney Winter-Brown’s (Sam Aston) son Aled hitting him.

In Ross’ eyes, this wasn’t acceptable. He wanted Fiz to head over and read her brother ‘the riot act’, believing that if Chesney didn’t sort things out with Aled, he’d turn into a violent character.

Tyrone marched over to see Chesney himself and stated that he will no longer let Dorin play with Aled.

When Ross rocked up, Tyrone’s attempt at intimidating Chesney took a darker turn. Ross proceeded to goad Tyrone, telling him not to roll over and let Chesney speak to him however he wanted.

Tyrone then punched Chesney in the face.

Ross goaded Ty into punching Chesney

With Fiz absolutely devastated and horrified, she didn’t want to be anywhere near Tyrone. This gave him the opportunity to head to the pub with Ross, where he was subjected to more of his dad’s vile and outdated comments.

When Fiz appeared, Tyrone attempted to go after her but he was stopped by Ross.

‘You’re the boss. Not Fiz, or anyone else’, Ross argued.

Ty took this on board and agreed. As he clinked his glass with his dad’s, Tyrone looked convinced that Ross was the only person on his side.

But how long is it going to take for Ty to realise that he’s been brainwashed by him?
