Jesse Palmer says Taylor Frankie Paul “breaks the format” on The Bachelorette

Host Jesse Palmer previews a dramatically different Bachelorette season led by Taylor Frankie Paul, explaining how the franchise newcomer reshapes the show’s long-standing formula

Jesse Palmer says the upcoming season of The Bachelorette will depart sharply from the franchise’s usual structure, crediting lead Taylor Frankie Paul with reshaping how the show unfolds.

Speaking ahead of the March 22 premiere, the longtime host said the reality personality, best known for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, repeatedly disrupts expectations built over two decades of the series.

In an interview with Parade, Palmer said,

“People who have watched the show for years do expect a season to go a certain way. But Taylor breaks the format so many times.”

Paul becomes the first Bachelorette drawn from outside Bachelor Nation, marking a significant shift for The Bachelorette.

Previous leads almost always came from prior seasons of The Bachelor or its spinoffs. Palmer said her lack of franchise history created unpredictability throughout production. He said,

“Taylor is an absolute wild card, and I mean that in the best way possible. As a host, I never knew what she was going to do or say.”

The Bachelorette season introduces a franchise outsider

The new season of The Bachelorette follows Paul as she navigates relationships under the show’s familiar structure of dates, eliminations, and rose ceremonies.

However, Palmer said her reality-TV background, combined with unfamiliarity with the franchise’s traditions, changed how events unfolded. He said,

“Obviously, she has a ton of experience on reality television, but she’s green to the franchise. So we got unbelievable rawness and authenticity from her. She also has a very soft and loving side that I don’t think gets highlighted on her other show.”

According to Palmer, that authenticity altered the tone of The Bachelorette while keeping its central goal intact.

He emphasized that viewers accustomed to predictable story beats may encounter surprises throughout the season.

Paul’s casting also reflects broader changes within the franchise, which have recently experimented with new formats such as The Golden Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise revamps.

Bringing in a lead from outside the ecosystem represents another attempt to refresh the long-running dating series.

Palmer, who has hosted multiple iterations of the franchise since 2021, said production cannot fully script how a season will play out. He praised the crew’s ability to adapt in real time. He said,

“You can’t over-prepare and plan before a season starts. From my seat, I’m most impressed by our production’s ability to just let the action happen and adjust on the fly and follow the story.”

Fresh off the main series, Palmer now hosts Bachelor Mansion Takeover – a home makeover contest shown on HGTV and available on Max.

A fresh batch of past competitors takes on the famous Malibu house tied to the show, aiming for a $100,000 reward.

The upgraded mansion will appear in the new season of The Bachelorette. Palmer said,

“The renovation was long overdue, and it’s really cool to see these cast members do the work themselves and leave their imprint on the mansion.”

Palmer’s perspective on the franchise spans more than two decades. He first appeared as the lead on The Bachelor in 2004 while playing quarterback for the New York Giants. He recalled being unprepared for the scale of production. He said,

“It was really eye-opening. I was so naïve to the size of the show and how big it was going to be. I remember being fascinated by how many people were involved.”

He later returned as host after a long career in sports broadcasting. Reflecting on that trajectory, Palmer said he never expected his original appearance to shape his professional future. He said,

“I had absolutely no idea being on The Bachelor would lead to this. It took 17 years for it to come full circle.”

His personal life also changed in the years since. Palmer married model and photographer Emely Fardo in 2020, and the couple welcomed daughter Ella Reine in January 2024.

As for why the franchise continues to endure, Palmer pointed to its focus on the contestants rather than spectacle alone. He said,

“The show’s secret sauce every single season is the cast, not the creative, the host, or the exotic locations. You root for people. You want them to find love.”

Whether Taylor Frankie Paul ultimately finds that outcome remains to be seen. But Palmer’s comments suggest viewers of The Bachelorette should not expect a conventional journey.
